NH square balers

My brother and I have managed to aquire a couple of NH 1280 hay cruiser self propelled balers. From what I've been able to find, the baler part is basically a 280. Long story short, we have the opportunity to buy a 268 baler in excellent condition. My question is, what are the differences between the 280 and the 268? we're thinking of putting the 268 baler mechanics on the 1280 frame if feasible.

can anyone help out?

The 280/1280 are 'big chamber'(16x18) bale. the 268 is a 'small chamber'(14x18) bale.Very few if any parts interchange. So no,you cant transplant 268(small chamber' parts on to your sp machines. To do that you need another 'big chamber'. 78;280;281;282;283;425.Alsp,if I'm not mistaken, the 268 uses a different type of feeder system as well.

I don't even recognize those NH baler models, were they popular 'out west' to compete with Freeman and such machines?

I don't think they competed with Freeman, they were a high capacity 2 string/wire machine.Made a 16x18" bale that weighed from 60 to 80 lbs(average). I suppose they are more popular 'out west' than 'back east'.Over the years I've owned # 78;282;283;425.They could eat a lot of hay.

the 80 series, 280 etc are higher capacity. I live in Washington state and you hardly see the smaller balers out here. I have a 282 that will put out 100 pound bales consistantly if hay is right. I have seen some of the old self propelled balers here, 1280, 1282 but not very many. The 283 NH faster, more strokes per minute. I have one of each from 280 up to 282. Unfourunately other than the 282 I use they are wire tie. If you are looking for parts for your 1280 I woiuld stick with 280 thru 281. there were different pickups available for each also

thanks for the info guys! we're in central Nebraska and hope to have taken 2 of the 1280's and make them into a working unit eventually. we drove to Wisconsin a couple years ago for a low hour Wisconsin engine for it, and my brother drove it in our town's annual Tractor Poker Run.
