I picked up a Squeeler 72 with a bunch of other junk for $200. It needed rebuilt and the guy had already attempted to start. On the PTO shaft side there are four tapped holes. I don't have a cover for this, and when I look at a parts diagram there isn't a cover shown either. (http://www.messicks.com/bh/84297)
The bearing itself is already held in by a snap ring, so this would just be a dust cover and hold the seal in place. Should I fabricate a cover for this, or are those holes just residual for this gearbox in another application?
Otherwise it's rebuilt and ready to go. Probably not the worlds greatest deal, but at least now it's "brand new" with bearings, gears, and blades for an investment about what a decent used one goes for.
