New Holland 512 Beater Bar- How hard is it to build one?

Good evening,

I have an old 512 spreader, which is in generally good repair and very serviceable for my needs, except that the beater bar is getting rotten enough that it's losing paddles because the mounting points are rotten. one of those whistling past your head is quite enough. I'd like to replace the shaft, but haven't had any luck finding one. I'm familiar with the task of replacing a shaft and the project doesn't scare me, and we frequently have to have a new one fabricated because the equipment is obsolete, so that's fine too.

When I look at the part diagram, one end is splined and the other is keyed, with the larger diameter in the center for paddle attachment, I'm assuming that the center is hollow and the ends are stub shafts, welded in.

Has anyone ever built one of these, or better yet, have one in a fencerow? I'm in northwest Illinois, if it matters.

Thanks for your time!

I rebuilt one in a JD 660 spreader. The ends were ok, so I saved them...one end was splined...and used a heavy wall 6 inch pipe for the beater. Made new brackets to mount the paddles one. Way heavier than what JD used.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe I bought some new ones from Shoups for my N.I. spreader. I had a couple that were cracked & welded some new plate to them. May not br right but I won't stand behind it anyway LOL, I made new teeth and the angle pieces that they go in too. made the teeth out of 3/16 x 1 strap and the angle was the same as was on it to start with. The angler pieces just bolt on so it isn't a bad job to do at all.

I would think that yours is OK except for the sheet metal tube that actually mounts the paddles. You should be able to get a fab shop to roll some 18 gauge steel to make a new one.

I salvaged the beaters from a IHC Mod 200 spreader some years ago.
They're still hanging up in the shed. Would you have any use for them?

Give Fry Equipment in Pa a call. They build new NH parts and aren't expensive. They specialize in NH and it'll be there in a couple of days UPS....
