John Deere 858a hay rake, what oil for gearbox?

Looking to do some winter maintenance on our old equipment and I am wondering what weight of oil or grease goes in the gear box on the JD 858a. I do not have a manual for this rake so I am a bit in the dark as far as maintenance. My manual for the JD 640 says you pack the gearbox with grease and not gear oil. Is this what all of you have done in the past? This seems odd to me as I am sure my rotary mower takes gear oil in the box, as does the NO. 5 mower and the Pequea tedder. Thanks for the input.

Sincerely,

if you try to run oil in it it will just leak out use corn head grease like stated, it turns to almost a liquid when in use and lubes well,,,, seen it many times over the years when someone buys a used F8 Danuser digger, they will not hold 90wt or and weight oil they are made to have only cornhead grease for lube

If it has oil seals on the shaft just use 80-90 wt. Other wise just fill it with grease. Can't remember how mine was set up but I think I filled it with oil after I rebuilt the gear box.
