ARPS Half Track Repair

I'm Curious if there are any ARPS Half tracks folks out there with repair experience? The ring retainer tabs that you bend down to secure the steel loops are getting weak and as i use the tracks to plow snow every once in a while a loop ring will push the retainer out and the ring will drop out of the locked position allowing one side of the track to separate. My question is: Can i weld some small mild steel plates 3/4"x 3" over the locks to permanently hold them down leaving only one section to allow removal of the tracks in spring ? Also while i'm here, has anyone installed a wider fatter tire on the bogey wheel to totally support the tracks to keep them aligned? Thanks Fellas and Merry Christmas.

I bet there aren?t many half track guys in this group but I would think you could weld what you are saying as long as you don?t get the rubber to hot

I Just think it would be easier to weld strips over everything rather than cutting off the rivets and making steel strips then hot riveting or bolting it all back. THanks

Tom,
A few years back I had to lengthen one of my sets. I had all the parts except the tabs. I just bent a few up out of flat stock using a torch and a rod in the vise and a hammer. They werent as pretty as the originals, but worked fine to this day. I did replace the rivets with grade 8 bolts and lock nuts. Arps tracks are worth their weight in gold. Once you have a set you'll never give them up. I buy parts when I find them so I can still use them in 30 years.

Thanks all, I'll save this project for the spring. It's snowing 6 inches the next two days and hopefully it will hold up long enough for me to play with my toy...lol. I'll get some mild steel and start getting the little plates cut to length and bent to shape inside my shop. There's no way i can get a Super C with a cab on it inside. You can see a picture of my tractor on "Classic tractor fever" Facebook page. Just scroll down a few stories till you see a farmall with a cab on it. Max's Tractor shed has taken photos and will supposedly be featuring it on one of their future episodes on the "Agriculture this week" news show on the RFD channel.

Well i had two breaks in the half tracks within 20 minutes because of the worn out brackets letting the chain loops drop out and i went ahead and welded the loops in place on one side to hold them together for the winter. I An worried that the loops may not be able to pivot fully so i only welded the side that kept dropping out and unhooking the tracks. I'm still going to weld some bent tabs over everything in the spring but was forced into doing this till then.
