bought a dearborn model in need of some parts. will fabricate the rear brackets thanks to Kirk's excellent documentation. has anyone ever installed (aftermarket) skid shoes on the dozer blade? or a spring release kit? thanks in advance.

i don't think i'll have this operational this year

You will probably have to modify an existing shoe,or make your own from scratch. Since you don't have release springs,I wonder if you don't have 'dozer' blade, instead of a snow plow/blade. A snow plow should have spring trips and skid shoes.

No need for skid shoes, just use the chains that are factory to set depth. And to get depth set at between links you can just twist the chain a bit to shorten it up. Have done that for years. And have never seen a snow blade and would not want one. they are tapered and you can only turn one way. The dozer blade were many around and not used just for snow plowing but for covering tile ditches amoung other uses. And they were sold as a grey blade as well as the Dearborn red. Mine is Dearborn red and 2 neighbors had Ferguson Grey blades as they had the TO30 tractors but same blade.

i suspect it is a dozer blade. but not certain from just looking at it. it is similar in appearance to the pics in the manual. its under tarps under 6" of snow right now or i would send a pic.

have wanted one for quite a while. cant wait to start working on it. since my barn space is limited, will have to wait until nice weather again.

i have a very long gravel drive, and i thought the skid shoes would help keeping from having to rake the gravel back into the driveway come spring. i get the chain concept. thought the skid shoes will allow more of a "float" over the uneven drive. no?

Dozer blade is same height on both sides of blade. Snow blade is tapered like the snow plow trucks that only would blow snow to right were made, Also like right wing of a V snow plow. Better for rolling snow to right but when you want to roll it to the left they will not workas it would be putting a large diameter pile of snot down to a small diameter. Like getting something out the neck of a bottle. And I have skid shoes for a rear blade and they just doug,on pavement they would let you set the blade a quarter inch above pavement so all wear would be on the shoes and not the cutting surface of the blade as if the blade was running on the pavement and the idea that they are cheaper and easier to replace. I would never mess with them on my front blade.

Here is a photo of some Dearborn blades. The one on the left is a snowplow blade 19-3 without the trip spring, the one in the middle is snow blade 19-3 with springs, the one on right is 19-2 dozer blade.
I think I have an extra set of skid shoes for the dearborn blade and have a spring kit I probably won't use. IMO the skid shoes help with the gravel, but when the ground is not frozen sometime the skid show will dig in and the blade will make contact and you will push some gravel. Once frozen, no problem. My gravel driveway is about 1300' long
Even though I will sell the spring kit I wouldn't put it on the dozer blade. If you are just plowing snow it would be ok but if you are going to push dirt or pushing over brush and small trees you don't want the springs besides the dozer blade will still push snow. For pushing dirt or brush the skid shoes could be raised up or taken off for blade contact.
So it's up to you weather the spring kit will help in your operation.

Weld about four tabs and a hunk of pipe to the cutting edge. You can use the edge bolts to mount the pipe to the blade. About a 1 1/2" pipe is ideal. It will ride over any stones and till clear most of the snow.

Why can't you just put some kind of solid link,or chain on to keep the springs from working? Then you can have solid for pushing dirt,or spring trip for snow.

I would not even want a spring trip for the snow as you can get so much pressure pushing against that blade it will do nothing but trip. Several years ago a friend was going to try to plow my drive with his Surban and could not do it because of that blade triping every time he tried pushing in. It worked ok for him at his home but not with the amount of snow I had.
