wood splitter hydraulics

>I've been fooling around with this closed vs open center hydraulics enigma. If my Prince LI 3000-1 valve on the splitter cannot be plugged to make it closed center, then I will have to get a new closed center valve to have my John Deere 2630 with closed center hydraulics work the splitter properly. Is this correct?

Simple answer is yes.

Might consider a power beyond valve. You can put a ball valve on the power beyond port and your splitter will work with both closed and open center systems.

Been trying to wrap my head around this since last night. Won't an open center work with that anyway for a splitter if it's just plugged in to the remotes? I'll grant you a closed center would be better,but for half an hour or so at a time I'd think the oil would circulate OK without a problem wouldn't it?

If you tried to go the other way and used a closed center valve on a tractor with open center hydraulics,it would cause the oil to overheat in a hurry because it would be blowing the relief valve all the time when the cylinder wasn't moving. I tried to run a hydraulic auger with a closed center speed control valve off a tractor with open center hydraulics. The oil got hotter than a $2 pistol in a hurry. I had to get an open center speed control for it,but I could still run it with a closed center tractor with that open center valve.
 
Using a power beyond with a ball valve on the power beyond port allows you to either block off flow for a closed center or let it flow for open center. You just T the ball valve into the return line. Open it for use on a open center and that lets the oil flow freely all the time or close the valve for closed center and then the only oil flowing back is from the return of the remote valve when there is oil being used. I did this on a forklift I put together a number of years ago.

A open center valve will work with a closed center system but the pump will be working full bore all the time and in the case of a John Deere it will be drawing all the horsepower the pump is capable of all the time.

yes If he did not have a valve on splitter, then the remotes would be valve, but would run out of flow if remotes did not return to a ported filter cover..I have a ported filter cup on my 2840 and a hose ran up from it for return..I also tied into a high pressure source and ran it up to rear with a 3000 psi valve and tie my splitter to high pressure to in on valve and out to the return hose(splitter has a closed center valve on it)...works great..also ran a twin v rake using the return line on the out on rake and used a remote...

Could you please explain how an open center valve can be utilized SUCCESSFULLY with the aid of a ball valve on a closed center hyd system? Do you intend for splitter operator to turn ball valve off/on when splitter isn't splitting wood?
 
That's why I'm wondering if it's different using the power beyond instead of locking the remote lever back. I could be missing something.
