Sears roebuck hammer Mill, what rpm should I run it at?

I recently purchased an old Sears roebuck belt drive hammer Mill and want to hook it up to my JD B. What rpm should a hammer Mill turn at so I can figure out where to keep my B throttled. Also, would it be possible to convert a Mill to pro drive? Thanks,

I think the stencil on mine reads 2200-3300? Quite a range!

I was fortunate enough to have a friend who converted his MC corn dryer from PTO to electric. The jackshaft/pulley arrangement was just right for converting my hammermill, as long I had a tractor with a 1000 RPM PTO.
 

On the Belt, our JD "B" always was at not much more than 1/2 throttle..at that, the Mill seemed plenty fast..

I believe ours was a JD Hammer Mill...
 
Back in the early 50s nobody knew anything about how to guage rpm speed. We had what I think was a MG hammer mill. Dad had a 48 H and he opened it all the way up. Course, one time he used it, the last time he used it, a hammer came loose and climbed 1/2 way up the pipe. That ended using the hammermill.
 
Your John Deere B set for proper PTO speed will be correct for that mill. I cannot remember if it said anything on it but we has a 10" Sears or David Bradley mill ant that is what it took. Used a 46 or 49 B on it. They do take quite a bit of power and do not overload the mill. 1/2" the best size screen for all around use. 1/4" for chicken feed and 3/4" for ear corn for cow feed. and the half inch for grinding hay for in hog or chicken feed as they need the vitamins and minerals in the hay and it is better than any artifical replacement.
