the last few years vertical till machines have been used more and more my neighbor has 2 which he pulls with 200? plus horsepower tractors.
40 years ago the old rule of thumb 10 horse power for every foot of width the dealer i worked for sold a lot of 9 foot kewanee chisel plows for john deere 4020 and 806 international guys
how much horsepower would a 10 foot vertical till machine need to pull it.

Very true. Compared to chisel plows vertical till machines don't have a particularly high draft load per foot but in order to work as intended they need to be pulled fast, like 8+ mph. Drawbar horsepower is the product of pulling force and speed so doubling the speed will double the power required for a given force. Folks often just think about the pulling force but the speed required is just as important in figuring the necessary power from the tractor. A good illustration of this is the old steamers and prairie tractors that could pull 12 or more plow bottoms but since they were creeping along at 2 mph the actual drawbar power (in other words, the work done per unit of time) wasn't all that high, especially considering the physical size of the equipment.

Vertical Tillage isn't deep ripping or chisel plowing. Vertical Tillage is something like a Great Plains 1800TT or 1800TM. Turbo Till (TT) or Turbo Max (TM).
