Getting ready to plant pasture grass if it will dry out
a little more then next summer if I can get my sickle
mower going I?ll cut rake and bale the hay off the
piece

Must be a lot warmer there than here. If I waited this long in the year, my seed would just rot. Ground is too cold after about the middle of Oct.

Always plant grass seed here as late as you can that way in the spring when it warms up the seed is in the ground and it?s growing as soon as it warms up on dry land especially irrigated you can get away with planting in the spring

It?s called dormant seeding. Losts of grass and hay gets planted October and later around here. ?Here? is northern Montana close to the Canadian border. I just seeded 80 acres of CRP yesterday for a neighborhood lady. We actually had snow on the ground but last two weeks of warm weather melted all of it and thawed out the top inch or so of the ground. Like SV said it will just lay in the ground and sprout when it warms up in the spring.

Finished drilling crp one year December 20th in 8 inches of had a beautiful stand the next year they wanted me to cut it for hay but it was way way to rocky I had to plow out the old grass that was there and replant another grass

afternoon sv. I have had the best luck planting grass seed for the lawn here on my acerage just before it snows, areas that I have had to fill low spots ruts etc. I fill with fresh black dirt and level in the fall and before the first snowfall I seed it down, rake it in and in the spring by the time the snow has all melted the grass is already up. I've had far better results seeding in the fall than during the summer.

Yip seeding in the summer and spring doesn?t work
around especially on a dryland piece I?ve drilled
right into snow and still had a great stand the
problem with spring planting is buy the time you can
get on the ground the moisture is long gone and
sometimes it won?t rain again for several weeks to
several months
