repairing an old hay elevator motor

Anyone have any specs on a hay elevator run capacitor ? (Emerson Electric motor115v, 60cy,ph1, 12 amp). 1953 motor but company sold & has no records, no data on the old capacitor. I'd prefer to not have to replace the whole motor. Hay elevator is pretty standard , but mfg. name is unreadable. Plenty of them online but not sure which one to get. thks

Likely just a bad starting capacitor. Try taking it to an elecrical shop. They may be able to replace it, and you're back in business in fifteen minutes.....

No repair shops anywhere near us out here. I'd like to get a new capacitor on line, but the specs on the old ones are worn away. Any suggestions on capacitors , that I can order ?

How do you know it is a run cap and not a start cap? Or does it have one of each? Any horsepower rating on the motor readable?

I would clean the contacts in the starter switch before I would start buying parts. If you disconnect the capacitor and hook the leads
together it should start with no load on it, the capacitor just gives it have more starting torque.

problem with this one is its cracked , almost broken in half. unusable for sure. I definitely need a new one. Most of those hay ladder motors are all the same, rpm ,voltage ect. . either 1 hp or a little less. I'd guess the capacitors would be similar.

I bet if you call this guy, he can help. Probably can sell you and ship you a replacement, very sharp guy. Barry Electric Company, (810) 985-8960 he rebuilt a motor for me, great resource.

As Gary and russ say, it is more likely the start winding switch than the capacitor. Probably 100 to one from my experience. Just put some witness marks on the side and the back cover plate, then pull that back cover plate off and you will be looking at the start winding switch. Then go on line and order one that looks like it if you can't just file it or straighten a bent part. Just a year ago I had a two year old motor that wouldn't start. All I had to do was just bend the switch a little.

Thanks for the phone # & info. I'll try 'em both. Been chasing my tail on this thing , but getting closer. thks for your help

The mfd value of motor start capacitors isn't real critical, in general, bigger is better, up to a certain point.

For a motor that has to start a load (such as a compressor) it's more critical, but for your bale elevator which I'm gonna ASSUME you're gonna start unloaded, no need to sweat it.

A 250 to 500 mfd @ 125 Volts motor starting 'lytic capacitor will get the job done.
