Side winder brush hog

What do you all think about a sidewinder brush hog. It's the
kind with a tire running off the pto shaft to turn the blades? A
fellow has one for sale by me and the design looks a little
goofy. I can see the benefit of not having to deal with a leaky
gear box but with my luck on getting flats I can see that tire
being a problem as well especially in the sticker bushes?

I have had several, have one now. I think they are some of the best. They are kinda heavy for their size. They are hard to tear up. Make sure the tire is aired up good or it will slip. You wont want to buy many tires, they are pricey.

I have one and as others have said , they are tough. But there is still an oil seal for the bearing on the shaft that turns the blades.

I am thinking those can out around the late 60s. The JD dealer in town sold them, the original tires did not last a year and we replaced them with a standard skinny car tire. That cured the problem,I have seem them with radial tires too.

Fred we had guys here with them. They seem to have a lot of flats. Most were traded for regular brush hogs with gear boxes. 1 older guy always complained about how hard his was to tear down and remove the tire. I did try many times to get him to put a new tire on the rim. He always came up with an older tire to put on the unit.

We had one here for 40 years. Awesome machine. The drive tire is away from anything that should cause flats, be sure and use the correct one. Probably only replaced 3 or 4 in the time we had it. Will cut almost anything. We put aircraft tires for the ones that run on the ground for thorns. Sold it for more than we paid for it and its still in use (and it was old when we bought it)
