JD 660 rake. Question about teeth

This is the first JD I have had. Its a dolly wheel rake and has holes for 3 teeth in a group instead of 2. They are rubber mounted. It needs a bunch of them. Do they rake that much better with the 3 teeth groups. Are these pretty good rakes in general? Thanks

They are a very good rake. I think three teeth is overkill. Mine I believe is set up using the two outside holes. One thing I'd look out for is to make sure the driveshaft can telescope. They will stick an raise heck with the drive.

We added the third teeth to ours. We felt in second cut grass hay that is fined stemed they helped. Dad had two 660's and only ran two teeth. Two are enough for most conditions. I would recomend buying Deere teeth rather than aftermarket as they hold up better and if possible store the rake inside as the sun will deteriorate the rubber with time. Tom

We have two John Deere 640 rakes with the 3-tooth set up.

Both do a very good job of raking both the Coastal Bermuda and Bahiagrass.

Hope this helps.

Like all the other comments, I agree they are very good old rakes. The comment about buying the JD tines is in my mind only partially right. They are certainly much better quality than the aftermarket versions, likely lasting 5 times longer. The downside is they cost 10 times as much. I use, 2 of the $1.99 TSC tines, per position and the rake does a pretty good job for an old 4 bar model. I am sure 3 per position would do a better job, but you have to decide if the extra cost in maintaining that number of tines is rewarded by extra yield from a cleaner field.
Good luck with the new rake.

I buy teeth from a local Amish man for $1.30 a piece. They are made by Hershel. I'm not sure who makes them for John Deere.

That's a very good price. The last ones I purchased from Deere were 18.99 and that was more than 10 years ago. Either the prices have dropped or we here in Canada are really hosed on the "exchange thing".

I had 500 series before the current 660.....selling them, a left and right pair was one of my big mistakes in life.......They had 3 and the guide bars were setup for bunches of 3. The 660 guide bars aren't and if you go to all the expense and trouble that I did in putting in the third one, where you could get one in....ends didn't allow it, first time you bale you will just find them gone from the machine and in your field. Wink!
