looking for the good/bad on a John Deere finish mower model 272, before I make an offer,
appears, when folks buy a new O turn mower they let the finish or grooming mower set or its up for sale

The 272 only has leveling wheels or non skid wheels on the rear and a roller on the front center.
the lower pin hitch is mounted ridge like a disc or plow, also the right side has a non removable grass Shute, most brands you have the option to bolt the grass Shute closed or open

other finish mower brands I have used have 4 wheels, one at each corner of the mower and the lower pins are mounted loose, so they give as you go over uneven ground,

if anyone has experience using a John Deere finish mower model 272, please give me your opinion,
before I buy, there are not too many of them (used for sale) in good condition, most used one I have seen on craigslist appear to have been abused rusty.

this one appears to be all there and not beat up, stored inside,

Thanks for your opinion, always best to get a number of different views, before you lay money on the table,

I personally prefer the four wheel mowers for the three point. If you are cutting flat level ground and the three point holds a consistent position, they probably work good. I've had a King Cutter, Caroni, and Land Pride, all with four bogey wheels. The land Pride (still use and like the best) and Caroin (good mower I sold with a tractor years ago) have non-removable chutes and single sided discharge. The King Cutter (still have but don't use) has an opening on both sides and a plate that will cover either side. The King Cutter does the poorest job of the 3 and is useless for wind rowing leaves.

I have one and I like it a lot. Only issue I have had is a blade fell off and the belt broke, then another time the tension spring broke (it was really rusty anyway). Where I live at it is very sandy so I like having the front mounted solid. In many cases I believe one with 4 wheels would dig in and not float right. This one came to me used and abused. Pulley surfaces have rust and big pits but don't seem to cause any issues or premature belt wear and the person that had it thought they had a brush hog and not a finish mower. Either way I know it was abused and for me using it in the right conditions it has been awesome with very little upkeep needed. I do agree sometimes that solid shute is just in the way and it also makes the blade on the other side wear faster because that is the blade always in the grass to be cut (edging around stuff, etc). All in all if I ever needed to find another I'd buy another 272 because this one has been so good even after abuse. Parts are plentiful through John Deere and most of the parts are the same as the commercial front mount mowers with 72 inch decks. On a side note my buddy has a 261 the 5ft version of the 272 and he has nothing but good things to say as well. I think his belt went something like 900 hours before needing replaced, which to me sounds like a heck of a long time if you are a homeowner cutting a few acres once a week.

I run a JD 261 and the neighbour runs a 272:

Keep belts aligned, keep all or any Grease fitting greased:

Remember it's a finishing Mower not a brush Mower:

Purchased JD 261 Grooming Mower:......$100.0

Replaced bearings in both flat 5" belt pulleys.....$16.00

Replaced V-Belt.......$60.00

Replaced all cartridge bolts with Stainless.....$5.00

Removed all three Blade spindles and inspected:

Sharpened blades:

Machine works great:

Both Tea-20 & MF FE 35 X handle it well:

The king cutter brand is the one I borrowed twice over the last 7 years, had to install a deck belt each TIme I borrowed the machine, however they had the belt at TSC at a reasonable price compared to other belts I have purchased,

That is where I got the idea that the end plates/sides could be removed or left in place to mulch up the material,

Wish I were closer to you I would try to work out a deal on your king cutter machine,

Problem I have here in backwater west Ky, there just are not many used finish mowers for sale, just happen to see this used JD 272 for asking price of $550

I might go look at it, will see,
Thanks all for your reply?s,
