5100OH drill not seeding enough.

Just acquired a 5100, semi decent shape for my small average and just seeding small grain. I replaced the chains, and I have the 7 tooth sprockets on, 7.5 20 tires. It is seeding what I figure to be 120 pounds when set for 154 pounds, setting 19. So, I have to go back over some of the field. The cups are set middle notch. I'm not sure if the top notch is heaviest, bottom notch is closed? Thanks for help.

What kind of small grain are you seeding, wheat? For wheat I have my 5100 drill set to about 19 or 20 and it seems to sow about 180 lbs. But you have to experiment a bit as not all seeds are the same size. I have my cups set to "A" for wheat and oats which is the smallest setting. Lever is all the way down in notch "A". I can't you tell off hand how many teeth my sprockets have without going to the farm. But they are the grain sprockets, not those for soybeans. I can count the teeth tomorrow. Al

Yes, wheat. My sprockets are the seven tooth. I had it set on nineteen for 154 pounds and it sewed maybe 120. The cups were set middle notch. You say they should be set bottom notch, door flap up?

Yes, bottom "A" notch is where I set mine for wheat & oats. Seems if you had yours set on the middle notch it would actually plant at a higher rate because of a larger opening. Tomorrow I when I go out to my hobby farm, I will check how many teeth are on the grain sprocket I use. Is it possible you are using the soybean sprockets. These change the seeding rate, but I am not sure if it's higher or lower. I never planted soybeans with it. Al

The 7 tooth sprocket is the correct one for small grain and that's what's on my drill. The 14 tooth sprocket is the slow speed drive sprocket and is normally used for soybeans. My suggestion is to try running at maybe "21" as the seed size affects planting rate. Also, in the operators manual, there is a procedure listed to determine the amount of seeds planted, but it is somewhat complex. Al

Look on the door bottoms. A lot of the old drills had the settings to use for various crops.....
