Chisel plow size ?

I have a new holland ts110. I want to get a chisel plow what size should i get. I have a sand clay soil. Southern pine county mn. Im planted in corn. Also what are your houghts on 3pt vs pull type? Thanks! :D

I am thinking you are going to want a disk chisel if you are going to be working in corn stalks. And they are only wheel carried and shank spacing is 15". A 3 point or a pull type will not have the disk blades to go in corn stalks and they are 12" shank spacing. The only place the 3 point Ford 7 shank I had would work was in bean stubble. I had clay ground. But no way would what I had even with choping corn stalks would they have gone thru it. A disk chisel will have longer shanks and as well as wider space more distance front to back between bars. But a lot more money. I have no idea what size your tractor is. Around here they will pull a 5 shank disk chisel with a hundred horsepower. 7 shank a lot more.

I would think so. My 5000 Ford was rated at 63HP for the 7 shank 3point model. But it had all it could do. A 5 shank would be no wider than the 7 shank 3pt I had.

I have a 7 point Glencoe Soil Saver that I pull with a 145hp tractor.

In theory I could pull a 9 shank, but in dry years when my clay soil bakes up and the compacted normally wet areas show up, the 7 shank I can
stay nice and deep.

I think a 5 shank would work well in your more forgiving soils with 110hp. (Is that pto hp which is the common way, or the more optomisic engine
hp?)

That is 110 engine hp. I dont think i could swing a disc chisel for the price they fetch this year. Would a 9 shank standard chisel plow be ok with my tractor?

If you have heavy ground a seven shank will be almost to much if you run deep. I ran a 5 shank with a well tuned 4020 and a 7 on a 4520 that runs 170 hp. A warning on 5 shank machines. Get a late model stretch frame as the older Landoll, glenco's, Deere's ect had a bad habit of bouncing side to side. It seems that the front discs will throw up a dirt clod that the tires then run over causing the one side to come up and the other side to go deeper which then throws a clod or pile causing the other side to repeat untill the whole thing just bounces back in forth and jerks the tractor around. The only way to stop it is to slow almost to a stop. In certain soil conditions it is a continuous problem. Neighbor had same problem with his brand new one and traded tractor and chisel for a seven shank. The last year I had the 5 shank Landoll I removed the wheels and used it on the three point hitch. It was a little heavy to carry but no more bouncing. Tom

It would work with 2 inch chisels. But they don't do much in corn stalks..... with twisted shovels it would be a load, probably work. I struggle with my tough wet clay soils so it is hard for me to relate to your lighter soils, you have to take my advice with a grain of salt. ;)

How are you managing the corn stalks? We grow 150-200bu corn here, and I chop after the combine, then run the disk chisel at a slight angle. Works well. Back when I was using a 2 inch old chisel plow it liked to plug up now and then.

We could not run a typical older disk chisel here in straight corn stalks, either need to chop after combining, or have a good chopping head.

I have a 5 shank Glenco and the only time it hops is when it's being pulling it too fast.

I prefer a pull type as it is easier on tractor rear end gears if you run into a rock or other immovable object. Not much give on a 3pt model but pull type can draft sideways.

Well seeing the prices of disc chisels and
Trying to find one in my area is close to
impossible for this year. Would you all
recomend molbord plowing then or could i
weigh down my disc run it threw then chisel
plow with a standard sryle?

I would go with the moldboard unless goverment prohibits clean tillage by requiring the trach to be left on top. I sold my chisel because I did not like the job it did after I was no longer having to use it on highly eroadable soil. Used moldboard every place else. More going back to moldboarding around me. The first notiller around me quit notilling after a few years and went back to a moldboard.
