IH 490 disc

Hi guys I thought I'd start another topic on the 490
It seems the IH 490 is the better disc than the Kawanee
I have a few more questions is $2500 a descent buy
The disks are worn on the front but I think I could still get a few years out of it then move the back discs to the front and put new ones on the rear
Also I have some concerns if my 1086 IH will pull it
I don't run duals but I am maxed with fluid with 3 sets of wheel weights on each wheel and running 20's
Thanks for any tips

I would put the new blades on the front and run them. When they are worn out replace the the
front and rear both. In my ground the fronts wear a lot quicker than the rear. We used to swap
them front to rear when the fronts started getting about 50% but it's a lot of work. Tony

I have a 24' on a 145 or so hp tractor with duals. It's a load in spring in my clays....

You should be about right, tho lack of duals is a bother?

They were running $3500-4500 here 3 years ago.

I'd put new blades in front. Tho a disk will ridge with miss matched blades.....

Put new on front not back if only replacing half. Just sold a 25' last spring for $8500. Your 1086 will handle a 21' just fine but duals
would help in soft conditions.

Not having duals dosent worry me as long as I can pull it
I don't have the brackets or the duals for my tractor and I dont want that extra expense of buying them just to pull the disc
I do think the tractor will pull it though just like it is
Thanks for the advice about putting the new disks on the front
I would have sure put them on the back if not for that advice
I think it currently has 16 3/4 disks on the front and 18 3/4 on the back
For just finishing land behind my chisel plow and offset I think I can use it with the smaller disk for a couple years then replace the front ones

My 24' uses all the hp and could use a little more traction than I have.

You will be fine with your tractor hp but you will run out of traction in soft/ harder to pull spots without duals. Can lift it a tad when you need to,
farming is a balancing act of what we want, what we need, what we can afford.

The worn out blades will help tho, it won't be cutting so much with such small blades left.

Should all work out for you, but certainly all your blades are worn out, so the disk is not as much of a bargain as I thought, but still should be an
ok buy to get you by.

I know the 16" disk are wore out but I think they will get me through at least this season
Then I can replace them and have a good harrow
I currently have a Taylor way that is just to small and ridges the land very bad
I bought a pretty nice offset disk this spring so I can use that for deep cutting and then use the 490 to level the land up

16 inch? you do know they started out at 22" don't you? $2500 with bad blades is too much, I bought mine for $1000 with 20 1/2 to 21" blades, I put all new on a few years ago, I did pull my 21 foot 490 with my 2290 once which will do anything a 1086 will, it was plenty disk for it
