Plow question

Thinking about buying a set of 2x16? plows

Do they have plenty of throat area to let debris flow

through so they do not get choked or plugged up so bad in corn stalks?

Depends entirely on the plow. Some have no more clearance than your 3-12", others have feet of clearance instead of inches. My Oliver was adjustable frame 3 bottom 3 point hitch. It was set on 16" spacing when we got it and carried 14" bottoms. But we could have set it to the 12" spacing and the only extra clearance it would have had was the bit wider from a wider cut. To get more clearance you need higher beams. Then coulters make a big difference. My Deere 55H 3-12" plow with standard coulters would plug bad, when we put the Yetter coulters on pluging problems went away. We also used those Yetter coulters on the Oliver.

Have a look at this

I saw this plow on craigslist,
2x16" MF plow no coulters.
but it does appear to have a high beam so trash should flow through,

price is $250 which is reasonable am sure it would need new points

I would pay that, may go look at it, but its at least 100+ miles from home.

he also has other 2x16" plows,
would it be ok to buy one that the third plow was taken off, if so you lose the furrow slide or furrow wheel depending on how it was made,

last year I used a ford 101 plow 2x14" did a great job, owner had just cut off the third plow with a torch, but it plowed fine.

maybe I should just borrow his plow for no more than I do, he borrows my Post hole digger.

big difference in the beam height 2x16" compared to my 3x12" trash packer MF plows.

It's ok to use a two bottom made from a three bottom but the whole third bottom should be shifted into the second bottom position. This way you will have the longer landside and tailwheel. You can unbolt the frame on your ferguson 3 bottom and shift the third bottom over and make it a 2 bottom. This will not solve you plugging. If you don't have that much of an area to plow you may want to consider a one bottom.

good point, will look for one in my area,
bet they are few and far between, do not know if I have ever seen one in person.
single bottom 16" ford or ferguson plow.

I just sold a single bottom Ferguson last Friday. I run across them from time to time, even had the Ferguson 18" one bottom. Don't overlook the newer one bottoms. I have a leinbach 16" one bottom manual trip plow. It uses the same bottom as the Ford 101 plow. I just bought a new share for it this spring. They are out of business now but used ones come up. Seen the same one at a swap meet in July for $125

plowed this patch this fall with my disc plow. however, sometimes the disc plow does not plow as deep as a flat bottom plow,
did get good coverage of the corn stalks and other garden debris, plow only clogged up one time,
