660 vs 640 JD Hay Rake

Any one know the difference between a JD 640 and a 660 hay rake, besides one having a front wheel? Also, is the front wheel better for operation or storage?

Thanks,
Robert

With the front wheel - forget about backing up, but then how much backing up would you be doing with a hay rake?

I think mine is a 660 (can't remember the number) - it has the dolly wheel. I really like it. I'm pretty sure it will turn sharper than one without the dolly wheel.

I also like the dolly wheel for getting it into the shed. I can back it (by hand) through a doorway that is less than 10' wide by putting a corner at a time in. The rake is wider than 10'.

Make sure you get the driveshaft with it. One of the u-joint yokes is proprietary and I'm told pretty expensive. Also - remove the driveshaft when roading it.

Most 640's were only four bar. The fifth was an option. All 660's have 5 bars. The lift set up is a little different but not any better. All gear box, drive and bar parts are the same. We took a 640 and completly rebuilt it. We replaced every bearing in the whole rake and added the 5th bar. We also added extra teeth to all the bars. Tom

Both 640 & 660 could have the option of a frt gauge wheel.
