do any of you have a shield for the guards on a sickle bar mower.

just want to keep my fingers and this thing could be a very dangerous machine letting the blade up down.

I saw this machine with guard, but it looks like it was home made.

I did see an old Ferguson YouTube video on bar mowers, the guy had a shield with Ferguson written on the shield, he took it off before he started mowing and placed it in the fence row.

have any of you made one?

I have been raising and lower a sickle bar mower for 37 plus years and still have al l10 fingers the simple trick is to keep your fingers out of the guard area and NEVER forget that. I use a flat head method to lower them NEVER grab it in any way. But yes one can loose a finger when lifting or lowering a bar because the sickle bar can/will move

I've been doing it for 63 years - still have 10 fingers and toes.

Handle it only with your hands on the back of the bar is one of those rules you NEVER violate.

I would be concerned that if you have a shield (like the photo) at some time you would grab the shield,
and then it slips, and now you have nine.

You might consider using your left hand open on the back of the cutter bar to support and secure the bar.

Use only the palm of your right hand open with your finger pointed to the back of the cutter bar.

Lift/lay the end of the cutter bar from/to the ground by the outer shoe.

This method has worked very good for many years.

Hope this helps.

That guard won't keep your fingers from getting cut off.I pick the end of the cutter bar up and then palm the back of the blade when raising it and never put my finger between the sickle sections and the guards. Some of the old pitman mowers were the worst about the time you'd get the blade straight up the sickle would drop about 2 sections.

I agree with the others on handling the bar, I have seen guys put a homemade guard on the front of the guards at a tractor show so someone doesn't walk into it

I can't add anything to what's already been said. When I do display mine anywhere I take a piece of J-channel for vinyl siding and wire it across the points of the guards. You can still stick your fingers in there if you really want to, but it does prevent getting caught on the tips of the guards when walking by.

Those would not drop if in good condition. Probably had pieces broke off. Seen that many a time. Also the pitman part of the knife head I have see then reversed and back part that is made to keep bar from doing that put on the front.

I agree with the replies. We have a rule never to step over the bar when it is down; you can damage your foot or fall onto it.
