weld repair or not on JD 456 baler

The belts on my JD 456 wear a groove on the metal arms inside that hold up some of the rollers. My dad's did the same thing. It's worn a decent groove in there (there is a extra piece of metal welded for this purpose from the factory) It isn't going to break or anything yet, but my question is should I weld the groove up or try some JB Weld high heat or something. Wondering if welding would stress the metal and make it easier to break in the future.

Any thoughts?

Just go ahead and weld it up. The weld will be stronger than the original metal next to it. What you are thinking of is quick cooling or quenching the metal in water. That will make it brittle.

I think those wear pieces are available from JD. 535 Baler PC has the parts as E131889 and E131890. Do not know if they will fit later machines.

Roger listed the replaceable wear plates E131890 and E131889 $36.55 each. These fit just about all of the JD balers from the 430-530 on up. IF you have ran it so long that you have a grove cut into the tension arm itself then you really SHOULD weld it. Clean it up good and preheat the area before welding it and slow cool it. IF you quick cool it you will make the arm brittle and it may crack right along your weld.

These wear plates and lacing pins are two things that need to be regularly replaced. Many times they do not and larger repairs are the result.

How often do you re-size your belts??? The outside belts usually do not stretch as much as the inner ones. So the outer belts will track different as the roll deflects a little due to the different belt lengths.

Good thoughts. The wear plate is welded on there, so it would make sense just to weld up the groove I imagine. Thanks for your input.

I think the weld on wear plates are welded on the edges of the arm, and not across the arm. Weld plates are probably not your normal soft steel.
