HELP IDENTIFYING VINTAGE LOG SPLITTER

I have been asked to rebuild this log splitter. All the owner can remember about it is that he bought it in the 1980's, based on a review he found in the CoEvolution (Whole Earth) Catalog. And he believes it was manufactured in Colorado.

The engine is a Kohler K181T, and according to the serial number was manufactured in 1981.

The control valve was manufactured by "Cross", and the hydraulic pump was manufactured by "Delta Power Hydraulics". There are no identifying markings on the ram cylinder. However, there are labels on it which state "Mountain Ram".

I have been researching this online for several days under the name "Mountain Ram" and have found nothing. Any help in identifying this log splitter would be greatly appreciated.

Probably a Speeco. They were made in Golden,CO. Speeco painted their stuff yellow. They also mode 3 point hitches and wide fronts, and a whole bunch of other stuff.

what are you rebuilding on the splitter? I have a Speeco splitter from the 70s or 80s. I think may have to just research each component on it's own. You can probably get seals for ram from hydraulics shop, or replace it with one from Surplus Equipment. Valve is ordinary hydraulic valve, probably with a detent in one direction.

They were made from vendor/component parts.Common off the shelf items. Get at any hydraulic shop. I doubt very much that Speeco will have ANY repair parts.

Had several of those Mountain Ram splitters in the late '80's and early 90's. The ones we had used Honda engines. They were the best. We had a commercial firewood operation in Reno NV. Yes they were made in Colorado but I'm sure they're out of business now. Yes most of the parts were available at any hydraulic shop. Fast splitters and durable.

It is a Mountain Ram wood splitter built in Carson City NV, the old owners name was Frank Harkenrider (not sure of spelling) My dad still has one of these splitters and it is in great shape. Best built splitter on the market !
