Deere 55 Plow Information And Help

All,

I'm considering buying this plow for $450 dollars. I don't know much about it, I know it is a model 55, has been converted to hydraulic lift at some point which I am ok with.

It looks relatively complete, but I'm not too familiar with these. Obviously it will need some new tires. :)

Anyone have any thoughts on it?

Thank you.

Not trying to be mean or anything, but $450.00 is about $250.00 or more too much. That plow would bring about $100.00 in KS in the shape it's in. It does have the newer wear parts which is a huge asset, but it's priced way too high. Bob

As far as working goes, I grew up around a 4 bottom wheel lift and a 5 bottom hydraulic. Set correctly they did an excellent job of plowing.

Its a little high in price, too bad they converted it to hydraulic lift, thats where its de-valued. $250 might be worth it. I recently bought a 55H hydraulic lift for $400. It needed the correct coulters, shares and a few other little things. But its a spoke rim style and it fits my vintage of John Deeres. Any other question i would be glad to help.

Thanks for the information and input. I'll have to sleep on it tonight. I found a 55H in quite a bit nicer shape, in my option for around $400 closer by. Checking to see if the guy still has it, but could be a better option.

Thanks again.

Depending what your pulling with, 55H (hydraulic) is a nice plow to use. I pull 55H 3-16 with a John Deere 70, and its a good match. I found a guy who makes shares, moldboards, landsides. My 55H needed shares, $125/shares, but should last the rest of my lifetime. If you could convert the mechanical lift plow back to its original set up it might be better and hold its resale. Most plows ive seened the were converted to hydraulic lift, was a cobbled up mess.

The guy says it's an easy conversion back, and it looks like everything is there, but not sure. I wouldn't mind a mechanical lift. I'd be pulling it most of the time with a 730 diesel or 4020 diesel. I'll have to see which one I want to go with. I would likely restore it eventually.

What are the orange pieces for, behind the moldboards.?

Are they because the plow is converted to high speed bottoms..??

Ended up finding two what I believe are 55H plows this weekend, one I believe and earlier model with the crank, and one later model with a lever in pretty good shape for $400. I'm leaning towards that latter since I think they want about double for the one with the crank.

I would never go with a clutch lift if tractor had hydrolicks. That twisting to grab and pull the rope is a pain in the backside all the way up.

Ended up buying the first one in my last post for $395. Going to pick it up Saturday. Does anyone know over all dimensions? Want to make sure it will fit on the trailer I have planned.

Thank you.

Way bigger and heavier than you think. Use at least a 16' long trailer with 2 3,500# or heavier axles.
