JD 246 sprocket change

I'm wanting to change the sprocket combination on my JD 246 planter. The manual gives me many different combos to work with but does not say how this is done. The shaft is keyed for several inches so I know the shaft can move but, I can't find a set screw or anything else that holds it in place. Any help on how to move these sprockets would be appreciated. Thx

If memory serves...(which aint the best anymore :) it was a ball and detent kind of thing. Bear in mind the 246's have been around for a while and the sprocket could be froze to the shaft in that position as almost no one moved anything once they got their rate set. It was more normal to change plate cell count as corn varieties changed. As is changing the upper and lower chain position should give 3 speeds from under drive to normal to overdrive.

I'm not sure of the detent theory- as I remember, that gear just slides on the shaft, and is held in line by the chain to the next set of shafts. Loosen the idler and remove the chain. Soak it good with a penetrant, and using a block of wood and a hammer, tap the gear in either direction on the shaft and as close to the shaft as you can get. Don't tap near the teeth- only near the shaft. If that doesn't work, use a heat wrench and heat the gear up good and hot around the shaftand tap ti again. Use of the penetrating juice may even help. It should start sliding easily after that.
