What parts to save from 55 Roll bar part out

I have a NH 55 roll bar rake that has a broken star. I bought it cheap figuring it would be an easy fix but parts aren't so easy to come by so I bought a 256 and started parting out the 55 and figure someone who had my issues could get some usable parts. Anyhow, I see most of the parts were upgraded, but I'm curious if some of the parts would be good spares. While they use a different bearing, the length of the bars seems the same. Would these work on my 256? Would the gearbox be usable on my 256? Or should I just keep the wheels and tines and call it a day?

Cant you just weld up the star and make a good rake out of it? That would be the quickest and cheapest way to get your money out of it.

Call Fry Equipment in PA. Betcha a dollar to a donut they'll have about a dozen lying around, and they can have it to you in a
couple of days....1-570-546-3968

I could weld it back up but they really don't go for much money. I'd have to take it all apart, fix all the other rigged up parts that the previous owner did to keep it raking and then paint it to get maybe $1200. Plus, the offset wheels really do make a difference on the later designs. The sum of the parts go for more than a whole rake. I'm not scraping any of it so I can help someone else put one together, or if I found another one I'd be in good shape for a restoration, but this one on it's own needs a parts rake and I'd be willing to bet most parts rakes I could come by will be in better shape.

I have a 55, as do many still around here.

I was cringing you were going to scrap it out for so much a lb, from what you said at first!

Whew......

The 256 probably still uses a lot of the same parts the 55 used. We have a 1959 56, you could park it next to a brand new 256, and its still looks like the exact same rake. We rebuilt the 56 over last winter $1300 in parts, all of the parts could be used on the 256. A very time proven hay rake!

I have a shop full of rusty scrap I won't get rid of just in case someone can use it to make a pattern. I don't like scraping things that could be useful to someone else. This rake "could" be saved, however, it would do better saving several other good rakes that only have one issue, or get damaged in use. If new parts were still available I probably would buy them and not worry about the cost so much, but once something no longer has parts available I do believe it can be responsible to consider the condition and suggest that responsibly parting one out may well keep several from meeting the same fate. The intention of my post was more in order to not sell something I myself might need down the road.
