closed throat baler question

what is a good rule of thumb to determine when moisture content is right for baling with a closed throat baler? cant afford better baler right now so have to make due. mowed some hay and it got wet so had to wait about a week to bale.rolled like a dream. mowed more on a saturday then tedded it and raked on monday. after popping off every drive chain, and rolling a belt, finally got a bale started, went to end of row and discovered it had pushed tailgate open and was not gaining anything so dumped and admitted defeat.i have baled with a new holland 650 is only experiance i have had........ so got spoiled. if you had enough hp it would bale with water running out of it. having to relearn how to bale with old technology. advise appriciated

Real simple.

DUST

When the dust stops flying you stop.

Proceed if you wish but after you finish spending an hour swearing, picking and cutting the wet hay out of the machine you will wish you had quit sooner and gone inside for a beer.

sounds like good advise. dad always felt and smelled of it but he had a new baler too! have no problem getting it to go
through compression roller but just wont start turning. loosened belt tension but didnt help. sure will make a grinning
baptist into a cussing methodist!

Keep your eye out for a New Holland chain/bar baler they may not make the neatest bale but they'll bale anything and can be bought in working condition in my area
for $300 to $500.

what hp do these usually require? that closed throat has gotta go. finally got baled what i had down after breaking a belt and a drive chain.

mine kept spreading the belts apart and would not roll and usually had to dump and start over. looked like a hay bomb went off all across field! when i did get lucky and started making a bale it kept pushing tailgate open so had to start over again.

I have a closed throat baler. It will bale hay wetter than will keep. What baler are you using? Usually a day or so running it/unplugging it will teach you the do's and don'ts. If your gate is coming open you have another problem. The few I've had all had some kind of hydraulic or mechanical gate lock.

its a vermeer 504c. the first hay i baled with it had got wet and ben down for about a week. i rolled 5 bales with no
problems whatsoever. so i mowed about 4 acres and tedded it. waited a bout 3 days and tried to bale....could not get a
bale to start rolling so had to wait another day or two. got 5 or six bales made after breaking drive chain and a belt.
had about 10 that would not start to roll so had to dump them and start over. maybe have belt tension too tight putting
too much pressure for bale to start. have 9'' belts on each side and 4'' in the middle. started on one side and moved
quickly to other side but middle belts just spread to one side and will not get the hay spinning. hay was plenty dry.

its not wrapping around copression roller until so much gets in there that it has no where else to go. using a massey
135 with aftermarket valve so may be bipassing back into system letting tailgait pressure relax. dont see any kind of
tailgate lock and cylinders are not leaking externaly
