Round baler

Hello, first I want to thank everyone who gave me input on my 990 haybine.
Now I'm looking for a round baler. I put up alfalfa and Bromegrass hay . 5 by 6 baler is what I need. Only do 10 acres. Don't need it New. The question is between a Heston 560 or a Vermeer 605. Thanks

Don't know much about the Hesson. With the 605 start with the F/G/H and go forward. Prior models were closed throat and hard to start bales. I run a 605H. Bales great except will not bale green hay. It has to be properly dried. Parts easy to get. I had to replace the main drive chain this year. Buying from Vermeer was actually cheaper than buying from the aftermarket.

I used a Vermeer 605H for years, tough old machine.
Basically the same machine as a Massey 1560.

Most important thing to do with these is follow the procedure to burnish the clutch at the start of each season.

If both were in roughly the same shape and price, I'd go Hesston simply for parts support. Hesston makes good stuff...or did before they got bought out.

I would spend my money on the Vermeer. Vermeer belts are smooth and starting the bale dosent depend on them to get the bale turning . If that Hesston has the Chevron or rough belts and they are worn bad its not going to be much good and will get worst as it gets older. The Vermeer needs to be an F , G , H or newer model to be any good.

One more thing. Belt condition is critical. They need to be all the same length and be able to take the tension from a full bale chamber. Look at the joints. They can be cut and re-done if the rest of the belt is in ok shape. To replace all belts in one of these balers is an expensive cost - $1000 is a ballpark figure. I bought a parts baler just to get the belts. Has been a treasure trove of additional parts as well and paid for itself twice over so far.
