John Deere 1209 mo/co

I'm going to replace my current mo/co later this year, so have started checking out newer (to me) machines. Local dealer has a 1209 on their lot, looks to be in pretty good condition for its age. Doesn't have an equal angle hitch on it now, possible in dealer shop to prevent theft? My question is I would be pulling it with a Oliver with a drop end drawbar, will that bracket work on that style drawbar?
Thanks

Not sure what you mean by drop end unless you mean it curves down then levels out for the last several inches. You should be alright on a 770 or 880 but the hydraulics could be a problem as you are border line on what it takes to raise it. I would want to try the tractor on the mower in that respect before you agree to buy it. Later Olivers should be no problem in hitch or hydraulics.

1650 is a great tractor ahead of a 1209.

We have a 1219. What is the difference. Compared to a 1209. Pull ours with a compact JD. 45 pto hp. I believe. Plenty of tractor. Just has one small hyd cyl. So may need hy pressure hyd. Could change cyl.

1219 and 1217 are just later models. I think only minor changes. Seven footers have a single cylinder on the left. Nines have one on each side in a master slave setup.

1209 was updated to splined crimper roll drive shaft from hex drive shaft at SN 267,063. It was also updated to one rear axle lift cylinder & pin type sickle head at SN 285,000. The tongue was updated several times as shown below. IIRC 1219 had improved crimper rolls compared to 1209

The last 1209 I had didn't have a conventional draw bar hitch. It had the swivel head designed to fit the equalizer add-on hitch pin. Went to my local "old tractor retailer" and he happened to have a used one for 50 bucks. With that hitch and the 1209, making square corners was a walk in the park. No having to come back and make the big X in the field to clean up the corners. Without it, you had the corners as it wouldn't turn sharp enough without terrible shaft vibrations.........which it is designed to eliminate on that and the the JD 530 baler I had at the time....which also had a receiver draw bar to fit the extension.

My main problem was the usual sickle bar generic faults and particularly on that machine (had 2) setting the height correctly. Even with the skid plates, seems on irregular ground I couldn't keep from scalping in places. With that, regrowth in those areas (of sudan-sorghum) was very slow. Hyd cylinders weren't bleeding down so that wasn't the issue. Probably just me. Didn't do hay that much and when I did, by the time I finished I remembered how it was done....... a little late.

I'll take a 1209 any day, its a good mower, my brother if I remember right has a 830 MOCO, I hate that thing (he even admits it was a mistake to get it).

Wow! Someone likes a sickle mower conditioner better than a disc mower conditioner!

I was locked and loaded to buy a disc mower conditioner later this year, but did a fool thing and worked a rebuild on my Hesston 1110 sickle
mower conditioner. It runs and cuts like a dream. Field looks the same after the hay is up, so won't be spending the $$$'s for a discbine
anytime soon....🙁

I got the model number of my brothers mower wrong, its a 820 MOCO, sickle bar mower. Regardless he's looking to get rid of it, and get a disk mower conditioner.
