New Holland 276 PTO shaft

After careful examination I figured out the PTO shaft/tube is bent on the 276 baler I just bought. The bend is just enough to make telescoping the tube very hard - the few minutes I have run the baler I was probably lucky I didn't pull something apart on the tractor or the clutch on the baler.

Finding a replacement has been an ordeal - I guess most of the 276 balers are still in the field. I bought a used shaft and yoke (part number 175486) from one supplier, then I bought a NOS tube that was reportedly for a 276 (Part 175488). When both parts arrived (different suppliers) the shaft would not slide into the tube - the shaft was larger than the hole in the tube. The bent shaft on the baler is the same size as the shaft that was ordered - but the hole in tube was definitely 1/4" smaller than needed. The parts book only shows one size PTO for the 276 baler (I believe the 277 has two sizes).

Do the New Holland balers have a smaller PTO shaft and tube?

The supplier is sure this is the correct tube but I think it's mislabeled (hand written tag). I believe he picked up a pile of new old stock parts and is selling it as its marked.

you shouldn't be having this much trouble finding parts. You don't need 'genuine' NH parts.Pto shafts /assemblys are standardized.Any equipment dealer will have a selection of 'generic' pto parts. Often times there is a display stand in the front room.Buy the part/componets you need and assemble them.some parts will have to be welded.Yes new will cost more, but by the time/money you spend screwing around trying to find 'used',you could have the baler running with new parts.PTOs are classified in categories(just like 3point hitches). However I don't remember them at this time.Measure the componets to determine which category you have.

Bent tubes can be straightened. Find a large shaft, closer to tube ID the better- slide the tube over it, support the shaft, and hammer out the bend. Heating the tube may help.

dhermesc, did you get the shaft figured out? Do you need the front half from the carrier bearing forward? If so, I may have one.

I'm still looking for the shaft ahead of the carrier bearing - what would be your price and what do you think shipping would run?

I found a guy that claims to have the entire PTO shaft from the hook up to the flywheel for $100. I'll see what I'm getting into Saturday morning.

if dhermesc doesn't take it, I could probably use it. I'm about a hour north of Portland. let me know what you have. thanks
