International 990 haybine

Bought a international 990 haybine. It works, but there's hay caught between the knives and guards. Is it that the knife and guards are dull? And need replacement. Any info thanks Tony

You need to adjust the hold downs and/or bend the guards up such that the knife and guard are rubbing or very close - like a pair of scissors.

If you don't have a manual, you can go on CaseIH website and order a paper copy or down download a PDF with a credit card.

IH 990 IMHO is a fine machine.

Good luck,
Bill

Tony, congrats on getting a good oldie. It seems that everybody that has had one loves those 990s.

I have a nice running 990 but it takes some work Maximum wear on the guards should have a gap no more than 1/4 inch.Replace as needed. Then replace any chipped or broken sections with serrated sections. Then start at out side and bend guards to get about 020 clearance between guard ledger and bottom of section. Take some time but when you do it it will cut hay like warm butter.

Don't forget to grease all the zerks om the machine. Then engage PTO and liberally apply chain oil to all the chains and sprockets.with the IH rattle can.

A new knife should be available aftermarket. Hershal has them so a tractor supply should be able to get them. The 990 was a very good machine. Dad had two seven ft machines and we sold dozens of them years ago. If yours has steel conditioning rolls make sure all the welds are good. Neighbor had a piece of steel come off and hit him in the head while mowing. The two that dad had both rolls were rubber but many had a top steel roll. Tom

IH knife sections are same as New Holland. JD has different spacing between the rivets, don'k know about other makes.
