Sharpen sickle knives still on the bar?

Works a bit easier if you move the bar one way, sharpen the most exposed edges, then move the other way and sharpen the other side.

I gave up on sharping them years ago since to replace them cost so little and they last for years. A pack of 12 are like $5 if that much. I also switched to the bolts instead of the rivets

I use serated knives and when they get dull, I replace them with new serated knives. As Old said they are inexpensive to replace.

I buy them form my local Orscheln's farm and home store. TSC has them as will most any tractor dealer

Yup. You are on a downward spiral doing so, but it can go for a quick redneck fix a time or two.

I agree. Get the top serrated sections and bolts. Far more efficient than grinding worn sections.

(quoted from post at 00:54:53 07/19/17) Dreamin if you switch to bolts, you will need the high arch hold down brackets too.

Not necessarily. You can put the nuts on the bottom, not just the top. They work either way. I've never had too much trouble except with some very old forged hold downs on an old JD mower. Anything I've run across on a haybine usually had enough clearance for the nut to be on top except for very worn hold downs.

Top or bottom, doesn't seem to make a difference from what I've seen. Just one mans experience...
