Guy wants to sell me a john deere 566 big round baler, has net and twine. He says its 1000 pto but can be changed to 540, I'm guessing the gear box needs changed as well as the tractor end of the power shaft. Will the monitor recognize the change and work like it should, is anything else needed in the change?

MaIn cross drive shaft(key 25) will have to be shortened or replaced with correct length shaft when gearbox is flipped. Changing tractor end of u-joint yoke isn't cheap or easy. Monitor will be fine. I wish my 467 was 1000 rpm drive as that puts less strain on driveshaft.

In addition to changing the hex shaft like Jim posted you will need to either change the complete PTO shaft and slip clutch or change the spring disks in the slip clutch. The torque is different at 540 RPM verses 1000 RPM. Your looking at about $2000 of parts if you have to use new. The wholegoods bundles where a little cheaper but JD now supplies them through parts so the price has gone up.

Rather than changing Bellville spring disks why could one not add or delete shim washers(key 22) to attain correct torque on clutch plates??
Thanks,Jim

If I was doing it I would call Richard at the baler salvage yard at Cooks in Clinton. They have a bunch of salvage Deere balers. Richard is really knowledgeable and can tell you what he has that will work. Last week I picked up a good front constant velocity PTO shaft for my 956A for $300. AgCo was $1700. Just the front half!
