cheap NH 488 haybine

Going to look at a haybine tomorow. It is just down the road and they are only asking 350$. It all works and runs out ok. It is very rusted and has seen better days. I am cutting less than 10 acres a year so I dont need a fancy mower. I know it is rusted out in the sheet metal behind the sickle but what do you guys think of this mower. any advice? Thank you

Over a decade ago I payed $500 for a NH460 and while the rubber on the one roller had some bad placed I used it for over 10 years with only the common type problem so if it works at all probably a very good price. I know I sure as heck would jump on it if it was in working order

I got along with mine pretty good for many years. I bought it in 1988 for 500 dollars because I could not afford anything more expensive. She was pretty tired when I got it and it fell apart literally a few years ago. I have good parts on it I need to sell. I bought a JD 1219 to take its place.

Ive spent more than that on a parts machine. Watch for slop in the gearbox. There is a half moon key in there and it gets wore. Eventually it will break the shaft.

well the seller called me and said that his phone was blowing up and asked if I could come down tonight and look at the MOCO. Well i hooked it up to my 656 and it ran fine, has no paint but was in good working order. So I paid 300 and It is now mine. thanks for the help.

A whole lot of machine for not much money at all.

Better yet, it was just down the road. Any time I find a bargain it is always a long road trip for me.

Surprised the seller lowered his price from his asking price. I would not have with my phone ringing so much....

He lives just down the road and I gave him a
couple of hogs Last year so I got a special
price. he bought the hay equipment for his
son who started a hay biusness when he was
in high school. Now the son is in college
and getting married and his dad is fed up
with moving the equipment all time cause
it's in his way. So he was selling it all
super cheap just to get it out of the way.

So, I paid $300 for a NH469 some years back. I put new rolls in, all new bearings, teeth, chains and belts. Cost $2,000 more. Ran it for about 12 years and sold it for $1,600. I was happy it left as I bought a NI5209 disc mower. Here is what I would do next time, pay more for a much better machine. I saw a couple nice ones at auctions that I would ultimately have spent 2/3 total buy price. A good running machine makes the work and hay go well. Dealing with a worn out machine means fixing breakdowns often when using it. Trouble with a Haybine is they have many moving parts. Many. But, it is the low price way to get started. Good luck.
