Model L Manure spreader

I have a Model L JD Manure Spreader. Would any body know how much material the spreader puts out at first setting. How much does it increase per notch. I am going to try and spread Bermuda Grass sprigs with this spreader. Was trying to get an idea how much this will put out. I understand that the amount of material in spreader will vary.

A fellow that I know, who used to work for a biosolids company, had to verify that first time purchasers had the means to properly apply the material. Sometimes when the information was not readily available they would just put some material in the spreader, spread a good sized tarp on the ground, set the spreader, then pull it across. They could then gather the material up and weigh it, or put into a container to get the volume.

I did that years ago on a small 2 acre field, and then disced them in,if I remember right.I had to experiment and guess on the spreader. It is hard to get an even amount spread across the whole field. The whole experiment did not work well,I think dry weather killed a lot of the sprigs, and later(next year),I plowed the whole field and sowed alfalfa. When the alfalfa started to die down several years later, low and behold Bermuda grass was growing in.But it was not a good mix,and I had tobacco planted there for 2 years to clean up the field. Now it is planted in orchard grass.
On a side note,I saved a few sprigs and put them in a bucket of dirt, set it beside my garage, and now I have Bermuda growing in that part of the yard.It spreads and smothers, slowly, but surely. It seems to be a SLOW to establish crop, and makes very fine stemmed hay.Good luck with your crop,Mark.

Calibrate the spreader. Put out some 3x3 sheets in a few places through the field and drive how you normally spread. Pick up the sheets, weigh them and figure how many pounds you have on that area, then figure out how many square yards are in an acre and divide. It will give you an idea of your spreading rate.....but, remember the different material may have different weights....
