I called the local farm equipment dealer who has a New Holland 658 baler for $4K in good working shape .

Will a Ford 3000 run this balers ? 47 motor HP , 38 Drawbar HP . The ground is fairly level , no steep hills .

Thank You - Ken .

It would be very 'iffy'. The 3000 isn't much more than an 8N. A 644 was comfortable behind my 6400, but it's about 90 HP. The
658 is a bigger baler and likely wants around 60 HP or more. See if he has a bigger tractor that he'll throw into the deal.....

My 1070 Case (105hp) knows my 688 baler is behind it. The book says 85hp minimum. The 2290 works really nice on it . A 658 would be smaller and would pull easier but I would want at least 70 or 75 hp on any baler.

I have a NH 658 and I have a 84 hp
massey 4wd and a mf 135 diesel. I have
pulled it with both...and I can tell
you it works the 135 to death..both in
hp and weight issues. My 135 is
basically the same as your ford. Now
however my 84hp doesn't even know it's
there. Id get a bigger tractor if I
were you.

I used to have a 5x6 (set for the full 6' diameter) JD 530, pulled by a 100 PTO hp JD 4230. I could make it start noticing the load at the last
6" of the roll, slight hills.

Answered this it your other thread but will expand on it.
My old 640 baler would give my 4000 a good work out, it has 52 pto hp, your 3000 only has 38 pto hp, 4000 is min 1200 lbs heavier also, so I seriously doubt a 3000 will handle anything bigger than a 630 series baler if that.
The BR7070 I have today is a newer version of the 658 and my 72 hp 6610 knows its back there, with a full bale chamber on a grade it's a pretty good load.
With a full bale these balers can have well over a thousand lbs of tongue weight, that's a lot of weight on a 3000's smaller drawbar.

Thanks for the replies .

I called the dealer this morning and he also said no . I asked him if my neighbors 5000 would work and he said yes . I don't want to be partners in the hay bussiness but i don't want to do nothing either .

The 658 is probably a good deal at $4k but not for me . Sweeden Ford in Murfeesboro , Ar has a good reputation of being honest and making a fair profit .

I have found an IH 8420 4 x 4 that I will look at this weekend for $3K . I will do some searches tonight on the IH .

Thanks for the help .
