lubrication on sickle bar

Was wondering about the lubrication on the actual sickle bar.
Do you put any lubrication on the nob that the pitman arm attaches to?

I have put oil on it, I also oil the sections where they are contacted by the guards, usually at the start of the season and at the end when it is going to sit for a while

Manual for my JD 9W says to use 30W motor oil. IIRC it recommends every 10 hours, the sickle head, guards and any pivot locations. I usually lube it before I use it, and before putting it up for winter. HTH. Mark

I always opened the nob and filled with grease gun, the rest of the bar got drenched in used oil the at the beginning of the season.

About every half to three quarter of an hour with used motor oil. I started out with old horse drawn mowers back in the 50's. Actually some knife heads did have a grease fitting in the ball and that small grove in top of the ball is for the oil to be able to get to sides of ball in the clamp.

The old JD #5 had a grease fitting right on the pitman. Needed to be greased about every 30 minutes or so. I found out once what happens if it is NOT greased. The whole thing just sort of disintegrated, and the broken pieces were too hot to pick up.

grease the pitman stick knob, use something like WD 40 when starting the mower, after that the juice from the grass, clover, alalfa will be enough to lube the mower. that's worked for me for 55 years.

I always pour used oil on it before starting cutting. Dad never did, but he didn't grease much either lol.
