New Holland 273 Knife replacement

I have ordered a "Plunger Knife Kit" from New Holland and I am going to try to replace the knives on my 273 Hayliner. Who ever owned the baler before me inserted a top to bottom full length fiberglass shim behind the stationary knife. So I am assuming there will be no real shims there. The traveling knife looks original. Should I replace one knife before the other, or does it not matter which one I tackle first? Ayn help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I always take mine out at the same time to have sharpened.. keeping in mind where and what shim went where is very important to put back hopefully the way it was.. HOWEVER.. not brain surgery to reinstall if they all just fall out.. Want to have even gap across the blade with .005 gap..

I don't know how you planned to do it, but I took the advice of people here and crawled into the feed chamber with a 4" angle grinder and sharpened my plunger knife that way. The stationary knife was easy to remove and grind square, then put back and shim to a tight clearance.

I can tell you with absolute certainty that the spec on a Deere baler is .030". I can't see why the newholland would be any different. Personally I would not go less than 30 thou given the nature of what you're setting. 5 thou is tighter than most main bearings. Think about that for a minute and ask yourself if anything in that plunger setup is as tight as the mains in the engine....
