Dearborn Loader Upgrades Just for Fun

Ok, I could go buy a new loader but where's the fun in that. Sooo, I have a Dearborn 19-22, Single Action Lift Arms and Trip Bucket. I have learned to manipulate the trip bucket but not exactly what I want. What I am going to do, for the fun of it, is to first add a hydraulic cylinder to control the bucket. The bucket has a right side bracket for connecting a cylinder and the old manual shows the conversion to hydraulic cylinder with a mounting kit.

First challenge is finding a trunnion cylinder with the right bore and stroke. Second challenge is fabricating a mounting bracket for the cylinder. Best guess on a bucket cylinder is:

Dual Action, Front Trunnion, 2 1/2 inch bore, 1.5 inch rod, 14 inch stroke, 1500 psi -- Not exactly easy to find and this is a guess so headed to a hydraulic cylinder shop to see what they know.

Then comes the hydraulic valves and plumbing. This is a 51 8N by the way with a Vickers front mounted hydraulic pump. It has a single control, single action valve for the lift and is factory original. It leaks by the way. I will need to go to dual control, dual action valve set but for now will leave the lift arms as single action cylinders. I will change those later. I am thinking one of the following valves will work for the upgrade:

It appears that the second has "float" but, new to plumbing hydraulics, I don't know if I need that. I am also assuming the jungle him pipes hold enough hydraulic fluid for both the bucket and lift since it is same assembly as used on the 19-23.

I appreciate any input on this project. Again, I know I can get something better and cheaper by just buying a new loader but what the heck, this is a hobby anyway. Ranks right up there with my care restorations.

Thanks....

I have a late 1950 8N with a Dearborn 19-71 loader on it and the frame is the hyd tank. It has double acting cylinders for the bucket 2 of them and then the lift one way cylinders. Plus it has a Scout backhoe so you will have more then enough fluid in the frame to do what you want to do

Hey thanks for the info. That takes care of the fluid capacity. The 19-71 looks pretty close to the 19-22 except a wider bucket. Any chance you can measure the bore, rod, and stroke on your bucket cylinders and send that my way?

Thanks...

On this 19-71 the bucket is not very wide and sits between the lift arm. But yes I could do a bit of measuring and even take a picture or 3 of it. This is a picture I just so happen to have on my computer right now of the bucket area. If it will load up. First try did not work so trying again LOL

Thanks for the pic. Any luck getting dimensions for the cylinders?
