New Idea 4643/ Hesston 530 Tailgate Latch

I bought a NI 4643 this Spring and used it for the first time today. I made some bales but also ejected some untied as the tailgate doesn't latch. Does anyone know how to adjust the latch hardware? I have the manual but it has nothing about this. The tailgate shuts fully but the latch pieces don't seem to move and the indicator rod doesn't go fully flush with the top of the frame. I'm wondering if the previous owner has tightened some things that need to have free play.

Thanks in advance.

I had to look it up to see what it looks like, I have a 1745 Massey made some what the same way! On it I have to turn the baler on while the door is open to get the chaff
out of the way or it will pinch in and not shut all the way. The other problem I had was when my Olivers hyd pump was going bad.

The door cylinders are what pulls the latch up in place, check to make sure they are free to come up in place, or is something blocking?

There is nothing blocking, but I'm starting to wonder if the things that need to move freely on those latches actually do.

What about fluid leaking by internally in the cylinder, not letting it go full travel? We have a 5530 Hesston(older version of 530) and a CaseIH 8420(same as 530). Can you hear the hydraulics bypass when the latch gets as far as it is going to go? Even though it is not fully latched.

Well I believe I can mark this solved. It looks like it was indeed a hydraulic problem with the cylinder not going full travel, but it seems to have been on the tractor side of things. I took the latches apart and the parts that were supposed to move freely did so. So I then decided to swap remote outlets (I have a 4 spool valve), and with the other pair the gate latched. It took 3 or 4 seconds after the gate was closed, but it did latch firmly.

Thanks everyone for all of the help, this is a big relief! Since I can see that there are people here with experience with Hesston low HP balers, I think I'll start a thread about my Case/IH 8430 that I've had for 5 years and still can't get to work despite very expensive dealer stays and road calls.

What sort of problem are you having with the 8430? It is the same baler as a Hesston 540. I worked on a 540 in fall of 2015 for someone. Some things are similar to 530/8420 but is uses hydraulics for bale tension.

It had multiple issues, bearings, belts, hydraulic, which have been fixed, but the main thing is that hay travels up the belts when starting a bale and wraps the uppermost steel roller that rests against the top rubber roller. It sometimes jams so bad it takes literally hours to clear and takes a major toll on my body. I have sunk many thousands into this and no resolution. :(

Is the slack staying out of the belts when you let the tailgate down?Do you put the full tension on the belts after the gate is closed by holding the hydraulic lever until the system bypasses? What does the dealer serviceman think could be causing this problem?

The belts aren't fully tight until the tailgate is latched is my take. When I close the gate I do hold the lever until I feel a sort of clunk and see the belts move a little telling me it is ready. The service people at the regional Case/IH dealer I took it to, twice, where they had it for a month and a half, had no clue. The last guy I have more respect for, he found things and fixed them that had escaped the dealer. He even came out and walked alongside the baler as I was baling. I think he honestly believed that he had the problem solved. But that was at the end of the season and I had just written yet another huge check for repairs as the baler sits gate up and hopelessly jammed, so I dropped the ball at that point.
