Hesston 530 Spring Replacement Problem

Hello everyone, we've been doing hay for the past
couple weeks and just recently one of our top spring
broke on our Hesston 530 Round Baler. We went
out and bought a new spring but are unsure of how
to replace it. At first we thought it was the wrong
size but now we know that there must be tension on
the springs and we aren't able to install the new one
yet. Any help is appreciated, just trying to get back
to baling ASAP.

I have done two of the top springs, one last month for a neighbor. The short version: run a wood beam across the top of baler and attach a cable 'come along' to the beam and the spring and winch into position.

A more detailed description: Put spring on baler and put top bracket on spring. Attach bracket to roller arm by putting in bolt that is 'furtherest' from spring. This will leave bracket and spring needing to be pulled up about 4 inches.

Take the sheet metal cover off top of baler, to prevent from bending it. I laid a 4x6 block (about 7-8 inches long) on top of tailgate hinge point(a good solid place)on each side of baler. Then got a 6x6 beam that was at least as wide as the baler, and laid it on top of the 4x6 blocks. Then got a 6x6 that was 12 inches or so wider than the baler and laid it on top of the first 6x6. Leave some hanging out on either side of baler. On the side opposite where you are working with the broken spring, run a chain or ratchet strap across the top of beam and attach it to tie down ring above the wheel. This anchors that end of the beams.

Now on the side with the broken spring, you can chain one end of cable puller to top beam and hook the other end in the spring. Ratchet the spring and bracket up into position and put the other bolt through bracket and roller arm.

Took me longer to write it than it will to do it. The reason for two 6x6s is so you will have enough vertical room for the come along to work. Post back if you have any questions. The whole rig was stable and safe. Those are very stiff springs.
