Ford 552 551 and/or Gehl 1500 1400 Packing roll

Hello, I have a Ford 552 baler (all the same parts as the other balers in the title, just different size bales) that I was able to tune to work
very well for me last season.
Yesterday i pulled it out to the field and it would take it hay like a champ, then it would clog up before it would start rolling the bale.
Once the bale is rolling it does great.
I messed with PTO speed, ground speed and windrow size but it always did the same thing. It seems the hay is getting sucked in past the bale
starter fingers in between the packing roll and upper belts. Then the upper belts stall out and it jams up.

I read that the later balers (like the 1460) had a fix for that, does anyone have any information, or photos they can share? Any other advice?

Thanks for your help!

I had one of those. It was my first round baler back in 79. Dry grass and straw are not your friend with those things. The newer Gehls use a threaded rod up on top to keep the belt rack from coming all the way ahead. It seems counter intuitive, but by having the belts loose,it allows more hay to go in to the chamber and gives you a bigger wad to start turning. As you know, once you have hay turning in there,it'll keep pulling it in.
Another thing they did on those, the last 1475 that I bought had pieces of belt wrapped one time, tightly around the roll in two places with two bolts in them for more traction.

Thanks so much for the idea! I will definitely try that this evening. I have about 70 bales worth windrowed hay in the field and an 80
% chance of rain tomorrow. When this baler works, I really like it, but when its has its on days and its drive off a cliff days.

They were a good first start when they came out. A lot of improvements have been made in baler technology since then. If you made the first two bales without tearing the lacing out of any belts, you did better than I did. I had more than just a few pre mature babies and some abortions before I could make a good bale with mine.
