Weld 256 rake gearbox?

Got ready to use one of our 256's and it wouldn't shift out of gear . Pulled the cover off the gearbox and a piece of the gear box fell on the floor. This is on the input side where the bearing is. Cause? I don't know was fine last fall. anyway its broken. New gearbox housing is $395. Can this be welded? I'm an ok welder with an AC Lincoln. Have had good luck with that using nickel rods bit never welded anything like this. or try to find someone with better equipment or bite the bullet and get a new housing? Thanks for your input.

I have done a lot of hack welding for over 25 years. For cast iron, I've had good luck with charcoal. Yup, build a good sized charcoal fire in the grill, get the parts hot, weld them up with nickel rod (DC seems to work best), and put them back in the coals. Take them out the next day after it cools.
I know more than a few are laughing, but this method does a couple of things. First, it heats and cool the metal slowly. Cast iron especially doesn't like thermal shock. Second, it may impart some carbon back into the metal (I'm not so sure about this).
Also, gently tap on the piece right after its' been welded. This is a very old trick (peening) that gets the molecules (?) lined up and relieves some of the stress.
Hey, the part is broke, what do you have to lose? And you can cook your hotdogs while your at it.

Nothing wrong with plowboy1's reply. Go and buy a few specialty cast rods and grind a vee at all the edges to be welded. It would be nice if DC current was available. Peening wouldn't hurt either. It's a rake gearbox not a rock crusher drive. I'm sure it will be fine and a whole lot cheaper.......Ron

Well that sure makes sense, because you see a lot of ones that have been welded and people are still running them . I guess you are lucky if the bottom seal leaks and lets the water out. lol
