SFI Drum Mower 3575 bearing replacement

My drum mower threw the upper bearing on 1
of my drums. I have the drum out and am
ready to reinstall it. I'm hoping someone
has some advice on installing the drum. Do
you recommend installing the upper bearing
1st and driving the shaft up through it or
setting the shaft in place and trying to
install the bearing at that point. Any tips
or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I doubled up on the number of cutters on mine. Had to change the timing to keep them from hitting the other side. Removed the top, loosened the horizontal drive shaft clamp on one end and completely removed on the other so that I could get the gears separated. Real simple looking gear arrangement. Far as I had to go.

On your question, I don't like to do any lateral banging on a ball bearing center race unsupported. If you tried to install the drum and then bring the bearing down over the shaft and onto the outer race landing, you will be fighting friction on both the inner and outer races simultaneously. I'd polish the shaft and lube it good. Then I'd mount the bearing in the gearbox housing and then using a floor jack for positive control on the drum, push the shaft up through the bearing while tapping on a sleeve positioned against the inner race from the top.

HTH.

Talk to the folks at SFI. They were very helpful when I had questions on my 2555 Drum Mower. bjr

Phil is the owner. Ask him. He sold me mine back about '07, and delivered it with some other things I bought....yes I paid freight but he was the trucking company. Was $250 back then just like today when he has a freight co. doing it. I couldn't have driven down there and loaded up with all that stuff and made it home for that....would have had to stay overnight somewhere.

I have a new question. I got it all put back together but after running for about 20 minutes wit no load the gear housing is really hot. Please forgive my ignorance here. I talked with Phil and he mentioned making sure the valve lash was set properly with the shims under the gear. I'm not sure how to do that. I simply put them back in the way they came out. Any thoughts
