Rotary mower blades

I had my 5' rotary mower out this weekend for the 1st time. I was trying to mow knee high green cheat. The mower was cutting some of it, but just bending over most of it. I brought it home to sharpen the blades. I had to go to Bushog's web page to see how to do it. They say to sharpen them like a lawn mower blade and then go back and grind the sharp edge back until it is an 1/8" wide. I took it back out and it mowed great. It cut all of the weeds instead of just bending them over. Should have done this a couple years ago. The pictures are before and after.

I've always been a believer in sharp is best but a friend several years ago told me the same story as this but in retirement never had the opportunity to check it out. Guess there is a big diference between a worn-rounded edge and a ground-off edge version as per the picture. Certainly would be less vulnerable to stone etc damage. Anybody else had experience??

I sharpen mine and keep them sharp. I mow my pasture and keep them clean so grass/weeds are all they whack. I think the ⅛" thing is for general purpose, you never know what you are going to hit type conditioins. Blades and the thickness helps the blade to survive a whack on an immovable object. On cutting better than round, think about it......when sharpening as you say you did, you created 2ea. 90 degree sharp edges in the process. No doubt you got a good cut from it.
