Hay Equipment Questions

Got a few more wagons to tow behind the baler this year, long tongues. Not a problem with the 58 year old New Holland 68, the wagon chute extension is 4ft. The JD348 - it has a stubby 2ft extension. What's the deal? Why such a short bale chute extension. Looks like there is going to be a red part on a green baler next time out. Note - when I say extension, both baler's have a 4ft chute coming off the bale case. It is the second chute extension going up to the wagon that is different.

Ground driven rakes. Really like the New Holland 56 we picked up this year - with dolly wheel. Simple drop a hitch pin and you are going. Dolly wheel seems to make for a tight turn.

However.....

Is it a fact of life with New Holland (or any other brand) ground driven rakes that you can count of grass hay hopelessly wrapping around the axle hubs/u-joints? If one bought a brand new New Holland 256 or better a 258 rake, could they count on grass wrapping like it does on our 56 - that would be a most aggravating discovery after a purchase.....

Thanks!
Bill

My 256 does not wrap up like that. I see people complaining about them breaking rubber teeth. The only time mine does that is when I get high centered on a piece of ground.

Hay wrapping isn't an endemic problem of 56/256/258 rakes. When the wheels and axles get there, the hay is supposed to be in front of the basket.

I pull a 56 and a 256 in tandem with a homemade double hitch. Never had a problem with hay wrapping around the axles. That back rake is putting 2 rake widths out the back with no problem. My guess is that you are either cutting your hay too tall or not letting the rake down low enough. I let mine down to where I can barely slip the toe of my shoe under it

I have pulled a 56 rake for about 16 years now. Never had grass wrapping. Makes me wonder how that is happening?

If its raking clean no cut hay can get to it to wrap,I see in your other post by the pictures you're cutting the hay at what I'd call really high that might be your problem.BTW my NH 56 or
256 I can't remember either ever wrapping the hay like you described.

Don't recall wrapping issue on 256, I'm going to say I've seen some hay wrapped around the U joints, but nothing that ever caused a problem.

I got a 56 also and never had hay wrap on it,,,,on your deere baler is the wagon hitch adjustable to get wagon closer to baler?

never had a wrapping issue at all on nay of my rakes. The hay shouldn't be there to wrap. Better figure out why you're missing all that hay!

I bought a John Deere rake last week and had to put 43 new teeth in it. Seems the p.o. loaned it to a friend and they didn't know how to rake hay. He sold it to me so he wouldn't have to loan it out again. Bought it for 100 and the price of the teeth 80. so it's a pretty good rake for 180., think I'll keep it for that money even tho I don't like the rubber mounted teeth in our rough reclaimed strip mine land, Keith

I have raked a lot of hay,and some in pretty tight quarters, but have never had hay wrap on either drive shaft.I've had a 55 NH,and presently have a 256 NH.I would like a dolly rake too,but the 256 seems be doing great.Unless your rake is not picking up hay-set too high off the ground,or is missing teeth,I can't think of a reason why hay would even be near the drive shaft enough to wrap.Mark
