Disc harrow question

Folks I recently had to do some repair work on a old disc I've inherited. Not a farmer so a lot of trial and error going on. During repairs/ disc replacement discovered rear disc were 20in and front disc were 18in? When I was looking at new harrows online a number of harrows listed had similar set ups as having bigger discs on back than on front while other sellers had same size on both? What is the reason/ purpose for having bigger disc on rear gangs?

Normally the discs start out with the same size discs front and rear. The front discs wear faster as they have to work the hardest in the soil; pretty soon they are 2" smaller than the rear disc blades. Some people may use smaller discs on the front; depends on how their disc is set up and leveled.

One of the things that I have learned is to never assume that whoever assembled the disc at the dealership when it was new, knew what they were doing. Study the manual, if one is available.

All new tandem disks I assembled when employed by a dealer has same diameter disk frt & rear.I agree with Dick that frt disk wear faster than rear disks
