Building a cultivator?

I use an old Ferguson cultivator to work up my roping arena. Slowly over time, I have broken enough shanks off that it is useless (not really, I just have to make many many passes to get the job done).

I would like to to take all the shanks off, and weld some angle Iron cross members to it. Then, weld some box blade shanks to those. I have found some box blade teeth on line for about $11. Not sure of the quality, but in this day and time, most stuff comes from China anyway.

1. Will I be happy with the performance of box blade teeth for this job? I only cut down about 4 or 5 inches, in soft soil.

2. Is there a better product to use for shanks?

You will notice no welded tillage equipment.... It makes it hard to replace worn stuff, and just the tiny movement of bolts or collars allows a bit
more forgiving on rocks and hard stuff.

Field cultivator shanks typically cut and lift dirt and roots; a box blade shank is a slicer to rip through the dirt. Both do good job; but they are
different jobs.

I think you would be changing the tillage machine quite a bit. It might end up what you want, but it will be different than it was?

I built a 6 foot field cultivator for my D17 using 2 inch square tubing and Danish tines with 4 inch teeth. Does very well in plowed ground. It uses the Snap Coupler hitch.

Danish tines move a lot of dirt because of their springiness. There are also heavier units available than just the ones that are used on row crop cultivators or finish tools.

The right size rebar, would fit right in the U bolts where the old tines came from. Think it would hold for this application? Just drag the rebar though the ground.
