Buck rake pushed by horses for loose hay. When you get to where you want the pile of hay to put in mow with hay fork you just back it out and go back for anouther load. Lots of them were made for front ends of tractors. Some were put on front ends of old cars but most were put on the back end. The horse powered buckrake was not popular here as hayloaders were used to load it on the wagons to take to the barn. Then the car mounted rakes became popular. I remember the 29 Buick buckrake we had and the 46 Dodge truck rake that followed the Buick. And that Buick would handle more of a load than the ton and half truck and easier and that was with the same fork.

We had one; it had a place to hook up a horse on each end. Ours didn't have any wheels, Dad sat on the back as counterweight to keep the teeth from gouging into the ground. If the team started to run away, Dad just jumped off the back and let the team go - when those teeth jammed into the ground it stopped the horses in their track with their front feet on the ground and their back end hanging up in the air until the bucker settled back down again.

My Grandpa had designed and patented an overshot stacker that we used to stack the hay with. The bucker brought the hay to the stacker, then backed away to leave the hay on the teeth of the stacker. My first field job was to drive the team that pulled the stacker teeth up and over the top of the frame to deposit the hay on top of the stack. I was 6 years old; the team knew more about the job than I did. My two older brothers forked the hay around to keep the stack level on the way up.

here is one I saw built by ferguson,
would have been much easier than that one with the horses if you had a tractor.

(quoted from post at 12:57:06 05/08/17) Several ranchers in the Big Hole Valley in SW Montana still use them.

OT but,as a teenager used to work summers on a dude ranch in the Big Hole, Lamarsh Crk. Sundance Lodge....memories.
