iDENTIFICATION OF COLE PLANTER

JUST BOUGHT THIS OLD COLE PLANTER. IT CAME MOUNTED ON A 3 POINT CULTEVATOR.
TOOK IT OFF OF CUTLIVATOR SO I COULD LOAD IT. THE REAR WHEEL IS LOCKED BUT
THAT WILL BE NO PROBLEM.

BELIEVE IT IS MX12 BUT NOT SURE.

no I didn't. Just the planter and cultivator. If I get it too working I plan on getting corn and bean plates at least.

Yea that might be the model. It's an old horse drawn unit, converted. There should be a lever on the other side to disengage. You should been able to look in the hopper and see why it's locked up. They are nice little one row units. I had one with a three point conversion but converted it to a one point fashitch for the cub.

No levers on it to disengage. The part that hooks to the cultivator looks as if it is factory made.
Pulled the planter plate this and the number on it is DX-519

Think that one uses the small plates Brinly also used those plates.I have a collection of Cole planter plates, over 200.Bought 60 at one time from a fellow near
Winston-Salem.

It sure looks like an MX 12, probably mounted on a Pittsburgh-type cultivator. That was certainly an option for these planters back in the day. Have you contacted the company regarding the plates? This planter is still made today, albeit with minor changes. Like someone else said, it may use the small plates, but it has been so long since I've messed with one I've forgotten. I do remember they are bad to lock up in the fertilizer box, and not the seed box. Give the fert. mechanism a good soaking in penetrating oil and it should free up pretty easy. Be careful using a hammer on it though, since a lot of the gears and other parts are cast iron and will break easy. Take the wheels off first, it makes getting to the mechanism a lot easier.

Thanks guys.

Was down close to Blacksburg, SC today and saw more. one was hooked to cultivator like mine and the other was a newer one on a cultivator also. Nobody around to talk to though.

It is an older 12MX (not MX12).

Another common place they seize/rust up is where the axle passes thru the cast iron frame to connect the two wheel halves. Fertilizer can fall down there, or even just water, and it will rust up tight, you may even have to heat it a little.

Each time you are finished planting you really need to pull the axle shaft and grease it up before storing; then spray everything else with oil ot WD-40. Use small lynch pins to lock the axle to the wheels for easy removal.

Besides the one plate it came with, did you get any extra gears? I believe they came with 8, 10, 12 or 14 tooth gears. What gear is on it now? If you're not lucky finding some of this stuff you may end up with more $$ invested in plates and gears than you paid for the planter!
