Bending - Straightening Haybine Guards

I have NEVER had success bending the guards on my trusty MF32 sickle mower or my advanced in sickle technology (of the day) Hesston 1110 mower conditioner - even when using the BFH.

So I'm considering one of these tools one uses like a lever to grab the tip of the guard and give it a pry/bend.

Anyone used one of these things with any success?

Question is - are you really bending the guard or the apron it is bolted to?

I say bending the apron because I should think, especially on older sickle mower conditioners, the ground hog holes, roots, etc., that a guard impacts may have enough force to slightly bend the area where the guard bolts to and make shimming the guard impractical.

Guard straightener, anyone one used one with success?

Thanks!
Bill

It has been probably fifteen years but all I ever used was a big hammer. This was for stub guards. Friends told me that back in the day they used a piece of pipe that fit snugly over their regular guards.

I have always used a piece of pipe that just fit over the end of the guard and never had any problems with doing it that way

I made one for my Hesston years ago. As you can see,it hooks over the back of the guard. I used 3/4 inch pipe, but the first time I used it,it bent. I had to find a piece of rod that fit tight and drive it inside of it.

Be careful! I ruined my shoulder using that thing. I stood on it with my hand on the bar in front of the reel and my elbow locked. The bolt broke and I came straight down. It about ripped my arm right out of the socket.

usto run new holland haybines those long guards was famious for bending i put a big jack under the bolt and a coupel whacks with a verrybig hammer usally got em straght.

Discbine is without a doubt something we are seriously considering - probably the JD625 moco with impellers. It is an 8ft-2in width machine and is not so hp demanding as the 630 or even a 9ft discbine. I really like the MF 1359 (New Idea 5209) mower conditioner with steel on steel rollers, but can't get around no shear hub protection.

I'm doing some refurb on the Hesston sickle drive this spring and if the mower conditioner works as advertised, I'll probably hold off on a discbine - we'll see. I've got one field of Timothy that everything has clicked this year and it is THICK. There will be a lot of bales off that field. That will be another test of the Hesston.

I think you have a JD630 moco - still liking it?

Thanks,

Bill

Bill, I have a deere 1327 disc moco and a 1350 disc moco.1327 is a 9.5 foot cut the 1350 is 8 foot cut both impeller machines. The 1327 is a 1980's model and the 1350 is a late 90's model.Bought both of them used but their in good condition.Stay on top of maintenence and adustments, keep sharp blades on 'em and you go cut hay...very quickly.Happy farming.

We used pipe that sipped over the end of the guard. Don't ever recall breaking a guard.

The cheap guards made in China are often not malleable like they should be to bend. In my experience with sickle mowers, which I still use for my hay fields, been able to bend good malleable guards with BFH and pipe but not so much luck on the cheapo ones sold at TSC.
